Deployable Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Boom with Bi-stability

A carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer boom can be used for the frame of solar sail spacecraft. The boom needs to be coiled to package it before deployment in space. Design of the packaging and deployment configuration requires estimating the coiled diameter of the boom before it is manufactured. In this study, the coiled diameter under packaging is numerically calculated and it is validated by experiment.
