Chemical warfare agents (CWAs) are highly toxic substances that must be detected at low concentrations due to their acute toxicity, rapid action, and potentially irreversible effects, which can lead to severe damage or death within a short timeframe. Among CWAs, nerve agents are the most hazardous, interfering with neuromuscular transmission and posing a significant threat to human health. In this study, we use a surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor coated with a nitrogen-doped multiwalled carbon nanotube-polypyrrole composite (N-MWCNT@PPy), synthesized using a hydrothermal method, to detect dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP) at 10 ppm concentration. As a simulant for the nerve agent sarin, DMMP was chosen to evaluate detection capabilities using a SAW sensor. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis revealed that the polypyrrole formed a stacked nano-sheet-like structure decorated and intertwined with the carbon nanotubes. The N-MWCNT@PPy composite exhibited a frequency shift of approximately 548 Hz for 10 ppm DMMP with reduced signal noise. Additionally, it has been suggested that hydrogen bonds could be formed between electron-deficient H atoms in N-H bond of PPy and electron-rich O atoms in P=O bond of the DMMP.
