Dietary supplement use and related factors in the Korean elderly outpatients

The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of dietary supplements and association of demographic, health-related and dietary characteristics with supplements use in Korean middle-aged and elderly outpatients. A cross-sectional survey was conducted from July to December in 2001 and subjects were 1702(male 731, female 971) age-related chronic disease outpatients aged over 50 years. Subjects were asked their use of supplements at least for a month in the past year and related factors using a standardized questionnaire by in-person interviews. Dietary intake was collected using FFQ and 24 hr recall method. Biochemical and anthropometric data were collected from medical record. The statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS system. Supplements use was reported by 49.3% of the subjects(males 52.1%, females 46.9%). There was a significant difference in sex, marital status, education level, living supporter, and socioeconomic status between supplement users and nonusers ; more man, less widow, higher education, self-living supporter, and higher socioeconomic status were associated with supplements use. Male subjects took Chinese medicine(18.5%), geigogi(16.9%), multivitamin(16.2%) in order and female counterpart did Chinese medicine(18.4%), multivitamin(18.1%), sangsik(13.1%) in order.
