Comprehensive Approach to Seismic Loss of Bridges

초록

In the present study, an analysis is conducted on the seismic vulnerability of bridges constructed within soft soil environments, employing proposed fragility functions at both the elemental and systemic levels. Aging and construction quality factors are also incorporated into the assessment to evaluate the seismic performance of bridges, accounting for earthquake probabilities of 2% and 10% over return periods of 50 and 100 years. The study's results highlighted that bridges in soil class D exhibit the highest vulnerability across all seismic and structural integrity scenarios. Furthermore, extending the service life of bridges in soil class C and class D by a decade leads to minimal to moderate damages, respectively, under comparable seismic hazard levels and similar construction quality. Bridges with suboptimal seismic design may lack the requisite flexibility for seismic energy absorption and dissipation, rendering them susceptible to collapse. The present findings will help for the evaluation of transportation network functionality and the formulation of decision-making procedures within a predefined framework for disintegration in the face of any earthquake scenario.
