A STUDY ON THE ARRIERE-GARDE APPROACH OF DESIGN FOR POSTMODERN URBAN LANDSCAPE IN INCHON

Architecture can only be sustained today as a critical practice if it assumes an arriere-garde position, that is to say, one which distance itself equally from the Enlightenment myth of progress and from a reactionary, unrealistic impulse to return to architectonic forms of pre-industrial past. This study intends to examine the strategy for qualitative urban development established by the equilibrium of the vernacular and the cityscape, to investigate the theoretical approach how to interpret the interrelationship between a city and architecture, place and time through methods of superimposition and programmatic transition, and for architecture, in an arriere-garde point of view, to intervene in existing urban fabric to achieve a well-balanced postmodern urban landscape.
