Background Lee Sun-suk (1905~1986) is a design educator who laid the foundation for design education and design promotion policy in Korea in the early days. The exhibition (1931) he held after studying abroad in Japan is considered as the first solo designer exhibition in Korea. Lee Sun-suk started design education at Seoul National University (SNU) in 1946. In his later years, he devoted himself to crafts and was gradually forgotten in the design field. However, his life and activities have important implications for the advancement of applied art to modern design, and thus, need to be reconsidered in the context of Korean design history. Methods This research was mainly carried out by reviewing literature. Previous studies on Lee Sun-suk's life and activities, and his works and writings were reviewed. Interviews with Chung Sihwa, who attended Lee Sun-suk's class in the 1960s, were referred to. The research also surveyed materials related to design education at SNU in the early days. Results From 1946 to the end of the 1960s, design education at SNU was divided into three periods. First, from 1946 to 1958, design education as applied art was mainly influenced by Japan. Second, between 1959 and 1965, the faculty was diversified and the influence of Western design began in earnest. Third, the government's implementation of the design promotion policy in 1966 and social change divided the fields of design and crafts into individual majors at SNU. Lee Sunsuk played a role in preparing the basic framework for design education when SNU opened in 1946.During the period from 1959 to 1965, he expanded the faculty by appointing professors who studied in the United States or graduated from SNU. In 1966, he became the first director of the Korea Craft Design Research Institute (predecessor of KIDP) affiliated with SNU. He also served as the chairman of the jury at the Korean Commercial & Industrial Art Exhibition that started in the same year and contributed to the national design promotion policy. Conclusions Lee Sun-suk studied applied art in the Japanese colonial era and chose his identity as a craftsman in his later years. However, his activities and role as a design educator at SNU in the early days helped us to understand the situation in which Korean design faced from 1946 to the endof the 1960s. The younger generation of designers who newly emerged in the 1970s, challenged the influence and limitations of Lee Sun-suk and led the industrialization and modernization of Korean design © 2021.
