In a previous study, we have newly isolated 108 strains of Lactobacillus spp.. In this study, several strains showing antagonistic activity against avian pathogens Salmonella enteritidis and S. gallinarum were selected. Antagonistic activity was measured by direct and deferred method to select 22 strains among them. Two strains out of 22 strains which showed high-level of antimicrobial activity were identified as L. salivarious (KLB39) and L. paracasei (KLB58) by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The activities were heat stable and proteincaeous. Their mode of action was shown to be bacteristatic. In order to assess their usage as probiotics for poultry KLB39 and KLB58 were examined their ability to prevent Salmonella gallinarum infection in chickens. The death rates of chickens challenged with S. gallinarum were increased. However, the death rates at 35 days were significantly lower in chickens (13.3%) inoculated with KLB58 than in those (40%) not inoculated (P < 0.05). Therefore, we suggest that KLB58 have probiotic effect for chickens.
