Global Citizenship and Multilingual Education in the Glocal Era

초록

This study highlights the nurturing global citizenship and multilingual education consistent with the journal’s theme, “The Present and Future of Japanese Studies in the Glocal Era.” In particular, the study focuses on multicultural and multilingual education in Korean global citizenship education. It finds that, among the topics of global citizenship education in Korea, there are several revisions required in the context of multicultural education. Multicultural education in Korea is carried out while completely excluding the multilingual area. This is directly associated with the serious social problem of the various types of violence experienced by members of multicultural families in Korea. Language and culture are inseparable; therefore, multilingual education should also be provided when conducting multicultural education. Many countries, such as the US and countries in EU, multiculturalism and multilingualism are equally reflected in global citizenship education. Lastly three suggestions are discussed for successfully fostering glocal global citizens and multilingual education in Korea.
