Immobilization of Lithium Polysulfides by Functional Carbon-based Aerogels in Lithium-sulfur Battery

To prevent the polysulfide-shuttle effect, frequently observed in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery, causing poor cycling efficiency and short cycle life, we prepared functional carbon-based aerogels using silica nanosphere templates. Nitrogen-doped carbon aerogels were synthesized using dopamine as carbon precursor to immobilize polysulfide and enhance the cycle life of Li-S battery. The carbon aerogels were impregnated with sulfur through solution infiltration and melt-diffusion process. The sulfur content entrapped in the carbon network, determined by TGA, ranged from approximately 50% to 80 % in weight. The surface characteristics of the carbon aerogels were analyzed by various characterization methods, and their electrochemical properties were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, discharge-charge cycling test and impedance measurement.
