Suppression of Polarization Dependence in the Design of an Arrayed-Waveguide Grating with Photodefinable Polyimide

(Cheju Island, Korea August 19-25, 2001) We report on the effective means of suppressing polarization dependence in the design simulation study of an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) made of photodefinable polyimide. The polarization dependence of an arrayed-waveguide grating device for a dense WDM system was excellently suppressed by controlling the grating order(m) for an appropriate index difference between TE and TM for polyimide. The transmission characteristics of two AWGs for two grating orders, m=70 and 90, showed wavelength shift of 5.04nm and nearly zero, respectively.
