The S1-S0 fluorescence excitation spectrum of p-methoxybenzyl alcohol prepared in the supersonic jet expansion has been obtained. Three different origins have been found, suggesting the existence of three different conformers of p-methoxybenxyl alcohol in the molecular jet. The long pregression of the C(B)-CH2OH torsional mode associated with each origin has been identified, which indicates that the geometry of p-methoxybenxyl alcohol in the S1 state is changed along the C(B)-CH2OH torsional angle upon the electronic excitation. The barrier for the torsional motion of the molecule in the S1 state has been calculated assuning a sinusoidal function for the potential ehersy curve along the torsional angle. Possible geometryes of conformers are suggested with the aid of ab initio calculations.
