초록
Background: Recent studies suggest that plasma total homocysteine is a risk factor for Alzheimer disease (AD) as well as vascular disease. However, the association of homocysteine and AD has not yet been studied in Asian. Objective: To investigate the relations of AD with plasma total homocysteine. Methods: Twelve patients with Alzheimer disease (AD) and thirteen cognitively intact control subjects participated in our study. Plasma total homocysteine was measured using chemiluminoscent immunoassay method. Results: Those with AD consisted of five males and seven females with a mean age of 73.3±5.2 years and a mean MMSE score of 18.8±4.3. Nondemented control group consisted of six males and seven females with a mean age of 71.0±6.5 years and a mean MMSE score of 26.6±2.4. Patients had a high elevation of plasma total homocysteine compared with controls (12.1±4.2 vs. 10.7±4.1), but it didn’t reach the statistical significance. Conclusion: AD patients did not have significantly elevated plasma total homocysteine in this study. The result might reveal racial or cultural difference or be due to a limitation of small sample size.
