On site pilot demonstration of anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) systems using two distinct membrane scouring methods was conducted to validate the use of AnMBR technology for treatment of domestic wastewater. Two pilot-scale AnMBR systems, a gas-sparged and a granular activated carbon (GAC)-fluidized AnMBR, were independently operated for over a year at wastewater treatment plants for a parallel assessment of performances. During the course of the pilot test excepting periods of mechanical shutdown the average net flux of the gas-sparged and GAC-fluidized AnMBRs were 7.6±1.6 and 7.9±2.2 LMH, respectively. The average effluent chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration in the gas-sparged and GAC-fluidized AnMBR were 58±27 and 29±9 mg/L, respectively. COD removal was more efficient and effective in the GAC-fluidized AnMBR over temperatures as low as 15°C. However, the membrane performance was more robust and flexible in the gas-sparged AnMBR.
