Blood Leptin of Obese Male Adults with Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver

Background and aims : Non-alcoholic fatty liver have been associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, total parenteral nutrition, jejuno-ileal bypass surgery, and the use of certain drugs. The present study was designed in order to evaluate whether patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver presented high circulating leptin levels or not, regardless of age or obesity Methods : Thirty patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver were compared with twenty-six normal control group in their demographic data, liver function tests, lipid profile, serum insulin and leptin. Results : Serum insulin and leptin levels were significantly higher in non-alcoholic fatty liver group than in normal control group, and serum triglyceride levels were significantly higher in non-alcoholic fatty liver group, too. Conclusions : Serum lepin associated with insulin or triglyceride may play a role in the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver, regardless of age or obesity.
