초록
Compared a city with ' a Memory theater', a historic city can be signified to be a record of man’s aspiration and failures; that is, a permanent and persistent entity that involves a sense of the timeless as well as of the temporal and of the timeless and of the temporal together. This study focuses on a chrono-topological collision in historical fields in the downtown of Seoul, which can be a so called ‘terrain vague’ in between places. By proposing the historical sense that involves a perception, not only of the pastness of the past, but of its presence together, the study provides a way how to utilize the substance of townscape and the picturesque, and as an idea, rationalizes the city as a theater of memory, suggesting an eclecticism that includes both utopia and tradition, ideal and context. The study, eventually by exercising a design experiment, attempts to represent a selected site in the Jeongdong area, the hub of Korean history of modernization and urbanization, with sensitive motive of the history, to recompose the urban structure of Jeongdong area with regard to the presence of the past, and finally to transform the time-border sorting out the past and presence into an architectural form that links the pastness with present circumstances.
