In order to reasonably predict damage extents of navy ships under in-compartment explosion (INCEX) loads, two conditions should be fulfilled: accurate INCEX load generation and estimation of fracture. This paper aims to predict damage extents of various navy ships with application of more advanced fracture model. The most existing 2,000ton naval ship was selected for this study, and related specifications were secured by Jane’s Fighting Ships. We used the CONWEP model for blast load generation that is embedded in a commercial finite element analysis (FEA) software ABAQUS/Explicit. Fracture initiation and propagation were estimated using the combined Hosford-Coulomb and localized necking model. The damage extents tended to decrease proportionally to the thickness of the bulkhead and the wall area. FEA results for more cases will be used to build a machine learning model that can predict the damage extents under a given condition such as warship size and compartment dimensions. © 2023 The Author(s).
