초록
In recent years, a wide variety of biomaterials have been introduced for tissue engineering applications. Most of these biomaterials such as ceramics don’t represent appropriate mechanical properties and are not good candidates for tissue engineering applications. There has been a growing demand for fabricating favorable biomaterials with desirable physicochemical and biological properties. Chitosan (CS)-based biomaterials are ideal bioactive materials that are extensively applied in biomedical field due to their unique properties such as excellent biocompatibility, hemocompatibility, high tendency to form various shapes, compatibility with different biomaterials, biodegradability, and proper physicochemical properties. Tissue regeneration is a complex cellular process, and various cells, genes, growth factors, and other signaling molecules are involved. This chapter highlights recent scientific findings of novel CS-based bioactive materials in tissue engineering. Besides, a broad perspective to form a base for the advanced applications of CS-based biomaterials in biomedicine and tissue engineering fields is provided. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
