초록

In this paper, a methodology for designing a warning sound for electric vehicles is discussed based on detectability and level of annoyance. In an electric vehicle, an additional warning sound is needed to ensure the safety of the pedestrians. However, this additional sound essentially emits a loud sound, and can be annoying to pedestrians. Then, the sound can become one of the causes of road noise. Therefore, a well-designed warning sound is required in an electric vehicle. A refined warning sound delivers minimal annoyance to pedestrians, while still allowing them to recognize that an electric car is approaching. Ten warning sounds were designed in this paper. The detectability and level of annoyance of these sounds were evaluated by the whine index that was developed in previous research. One of the ten designed sounds was selected as a warning sound applied to an electric vehicle. The confirmation of this approach was validated with a vehicle test. Based on these results, it was concluded that the proposed method would be useful in the design of the warning sound with good detectability and low level of annoyance.
