A New MMI-Type Waveguide Polarization Splitter Using Photodefinable Birefrengence Polyimide

Proceedings of International Conference on Photo-responsive Organics and Polymers 2001, (Cheju Island, Korea August 19-25, 2001) A new concept of designing polarization splitter based on the multimode interference effect and the birefringent effect of the photodefinable polyimide material is proposed. The extinction ratios of the optimally designed polarization splitter were found 31.33 dB and 30.49 dB for TE and TM polarizations, respectively. The birefringence of the photodefinable polyimide could be controlled from 0.011 to 0.024 according to the film preparation conditions.
