Iron Catalysed Oxidation of Alcohols with Periodic Acid

Oxidation of alcohols has been carried out by using iron and picolinic acid as catalyst and periodic acid as oxidant. The reactions have been carried out at room temperature, gave moderate to good yield. The activated alcohols gave better yield rather than the deactivated ones. The 2° alcohols are cleanly converted to ketones with good yield. Oxidations with periodic acid are very selective to oxidize alcohols to aldehydes (or ketones) being the only products. This system has been found to be a good catalyst system to oxidize 1° and 2° alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes and ketones. The results are discussed in detail.
