This study compares individual and social characteristics of adolescents under probation with high school students who did not engage in criminal activities. Both adolescents (male=318, female=151) and their 519 parents (fathers=174, mothers=345), for a total of 1,039 respondents, participated in the study. First, both groups are most likely to trust their parents and to confide in their friends when they were having difficulties. Second, parents of adolescents under probation report disobedience from their children and parents of high school students report academic problems as most difficulties issue in socializing their children. Third, the adolescents under probation are likely to spend time with their friends at Internet caf?and video game room, while high school students are more likely to spend their time around the school. Fourth, adolescents under probation are likely to have committed a crime when they were with their friends, trust their friends, and spend a large amount of time with them. Those adolescents who were under probation for a longer period had more friends who were also under probation and who were also under probation for a longer period of time
