Fabrication of three dimensionally tapered polymer micro-optical waveguide for optical interconnection applications

The purpose of this paper is to report for the first time a new and simple method of fabricating 3- dimensionally(3-D) tapered polymer optical waveguide by way of etching copper groove in a tapered shape and filling them with polymer materials. This provides a solution to fabricate the 3-D tapered polymer optical waveguides. This will help the process of optically integrating optical and optoelectronic devices like lasers, photodetectors, and optical waveguides, for the fabrication of new components like optical printed circuit board (O-PCB) that we have proposed for low cost and high volume fabrication.[1-2] For OPCB fabrication we use these tapered waveguides to achieve the optical coupling between individual devices of different sizes and shapes.[3-5].
