Reliability Estimation for hollow and solid shafts with circumferential surface crack under bending load

초록

In general, the hollow shaft is preferred to accomplish the lighter weight comparing with the same strength as of the solid shaft under a bending load. However, the reliability for these shafts with a crack may be different. In this paper, a methodology to evaluate the reliability of hollow and solid shafts having a circumferential crack by using the probabilistic method is introduced. Furthermore, a case study is added to prove the application of the proposed methodology. The probability of failure calculated by using the First-Order Reliability Method (FORM) is utilized to determine of reliability. The effects of probability distribution characteristics of random variable in Limit State Function (LSF) such as the normal distribution on the failure probability are systematically studied. The results obtained by using the FORM are compared with those determined by the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS).
