Analyzing spatial dimension of pick-up and delivery failure rates of parcel delivery agencies

초록

In most developed countries, the parcel delivery industry has grown tremendously in recent decades, especially with the proliferation of e-commerce. Situated at the forefront of the parcel delivery service, parcel pick-up and delivery operations play a critical role in the entire parcel distribution network. However, such pick-up and “last mile” delivery services to end customers are often outsourced to local delivery agencies and receive relatively less attention from major parcel distribution companies, especially in South Korea. The service quality of pick-up and delivery operations varies by delivery agency located at the end of the parcel delivery network. However, little attention has been paid to this issue. This study aims to identify the spatial dimensions of pick-up and delivery failure rates of parcel delivery agencies and their influencing factors. This study performed a spatial regression analysis considering pick-up and delivery failure rates of parcel delivery agencies as the dependent variables, including per-capita pick-up and delivery loads, pick-up and delivery densities, traveling time to the end-of-line terminals, and service area characteristics. The uneven allocation of pick-up and delivery loads was identified as the most influential factor of pick-up and delivery failure rates.
