Patterns of Consumption and Level of Consumption of Urban Poor Households in Inchon. Korea

The purposer of this study was to classify patterns of consumption deprivation and to compare level of consumption by patterns of consumption deprivation. Detailed data were collected through interviews with the primary women of 563 households in Inchon, Korea. Three patterns were classified by use of cluster analysis: 'Overall satisfied Pattern(OSP)', 'Overall Deprived Pattern 1 (ODP-1)' and 'Overall Drprived Pattern 2 (ODP-2)'. Those in ODP-2 tended to have consistently the highest level of deprivation for any consumption category among three clusters. The findings show that those in ODP-2 were absolutely poor households, while those in ODP-1 were relatively poor households. therefore, welfare policies for absolutely poor households differenciated from those for relatively poor households should be developed to alleviate consumption deprivation of urban poor households.
