Characterization of PLLA/PEO blends with different compatibilizers

Poly(L-lactide)(PLLA), an excellent biocompatible polymer, has been blended with poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO), and the mechanical properties of the blend were decreased dramatically with the increased of PEO content.In this study, PLLA was blended with PEO at fixed ratio of 60:40 by weight and poly(vinly acetate)(PVAc), poly (methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) and poly(methyl acrylate)(PMA)were used as compatibilizers to enhance the mechanical properties. PLLA/PEO blends were prepared by solvent casting in chloroform and by melt blending in a Brabender mixer to compare various properties of PLLA/PEO blends, DSC,WAXD,UTM and SEM were used. Also hydrolysis was carried out to measure weight loss with time.Finally, we examined the spherulite growth behavior and rate with different compatibilizers under microscope with hot stage at different temperatures.
