DEVELOPMENT OF 500W VERTICAL-AXIS WIND TURBINE SYSTEM

This paper presents the wind tunnel and the field-test measurement results of an H-type vertical axis wind turbine with variable pitch capability to adjust to local wind conditions. The H-type wind turbine rotor model with impulsive blades of flexible fabric material was designed and tested in an open surroundings. Performances of wind turbine rotor models have been investigated with varying aspect ratios of blade, numbers of blade, blade setting angles and solidities. The proposed wind turbines are tested in mostly at the wind speeds ranging from 2m/s (cut-in speed) to 6m/s in urban environment. The proposed type of vertical-axis wind turbine was found to operate at a power coefficient of 0.2 around a tip-speed ratio of 0.8.
