『19세기 영어권 문학』의 학술 논의 지형도: 제목의 의미연결망 1998-2023

This paper attempts to identify the academic discourse landscape of the journal Nineteenth Century Literature in English by analyzing the co-occurrence network of article titles. As a result, ‘woman’ and ‘novel’ (in Korean) were identified as the most dominant keyword pair over the entire period of the journal’s 26-year existence. However, network analysis does not reveal the process of formation and change of such discussions. To compensate for these weaknesses, we tried a new method of time-series analysis. Instead of arbitrarily dividing the periods, we identified changes in the topic within the data and found turning points. To do this, we used a modularity analysis of the network and calculated the annual distribution of clusters. We found that the turning point was in 2008, when the number of English-language articles increased, and in 2018, when the scale of publication began to shrink. As a result, we were able to obtain a network for each of the three periods: the formation, development, and transformation of the academic discussion. The academic discussion of Nineteenth Century Literature in English is shown to have initially formed around the study of Romantic poetry, but soon gave way to the study of novels about and by women. The pair ‘woman’ and ‘novel’ is still dominant, but since 2018 the frequency of ‘novel’ has declined, and even ‘woman’ has given way to ‘narrative,’ which has surged as a new hub. The centrality calculation made it possible to make these discoveries. Overall, studies of major authors have declined, while those of works in variety have developed, and the tendencies to explore political, social, and cultural contexts have recently converged into new historicist and postcolonial approaches.
