The Study on the Convertibility between Air and Sea Cargo Commodity

초록

Korea is highly dependent on global economic conditions, and about 60% of its gross national income had imported/ exported through airports and seaports. In general, air cargo is an expensive cargo with high value added compared to sea cargo, and sea cargo is a large-capacity cargo that can be transported in bulk at once. Over the past decade, air and sea cargo have grown in a similar pattern, but air cargo has grown slightly higher than sea. The purpose of this study is to analyze how air and sea cargo have converted according to the value of transport commodity and to reveal their implications. Total 49 commodities that accounted for about 80% of the volume of air cargo are selected to analyze their price elasticity. For analyzing price elasticity of air and cargo, a log-linear function regression model has applied. As a result of the analysis, the price elasticity of air import/export cargo was higher than that of sea import/export cargo. In addition, it was analyzed that the higher the air transport rate, the lower the price elasticity, so that some air and sea cargo commodities could be converted from sea to air or from air to sea depending on the price. For the mutual conversion of air and sea cargo commodity in the future, it is necessary to periodically analyze the price elasticity of sea and air cargo and also trace the detailed prices of convertible commodities.
