Simplified vulnerability assessment procedure for the warship based on the vulnerable area approach

The survivability of the warship is defined as the capability of a warship to avoid or withstand a man-made hostile environment. Warship vulnerability assessment is an essential part in warship combat survivability discipline. The survivability of the warship consists of three probabilities, i.e. susceptibility, vulnerability and recoverability. The vulnerability is defined as the inability of a warship to withstand the man-made hostile environment. In other words, it can be considered as a conditional probability of being killed, given a hit. This paper has described the vulnerability assessment procedure for the hypothetical system of a warship which consists of critical components. The applicability of vulnerable area methods to assess the vulnerability of a warship is also suggested through several examples.
