Spectral Element Modeling of Piezoelectric Layered Beams

In this paper, the axial-bending coupled equations of motion for a elastic-piezoelectric two-layer beam are derived, and then the spectral element is formulated from exact eigenfuctions. A modal analysis approach for the bending-axial coupled equations of motion is introduced as well. The solutions obtained by spectral element method (SEM) and modal analysis method (MAM) are compared to each other to evaluate their accuracy. It is observed that the solutions of bending-axial coupled problem converge to the solutions of pure bending and pure axial motion problems as the thickness of piezoelectric layer vanishes.
