Some benzyl substituted-benzylamines underwent debenzylation by FeⅢTPPCl/ PhIO. Relative rates (kY/kH) were measured. Hammett correlations were better correlated with σ(ρ= -0.13 : r = 0.996) rather than σ+ (ρ+ = -0.10 : r = 0.968). The reactions of cytochrome P-450 (CYP450) and lead tetraacetate (LTA) with the same amines also showed similar debenzylations obeying Hammett correlations with σ. The mechanisms of oxidative N-debenzylation by Fe(III)TPPCl/PhIO, CYP450, and LTA are proposed to be electron transfer (ET) but not hydrogen atom transfer (HAT).
