Integrative approach to predict the vibration reduction characteristics of viscoelastic polymeric patches wrapping around vibrating pipelines

Vibration mitigation in the pipelines is critical in maintaining their functionality and integrity. Although viscoelastic polymer-based damping is a mainstream method for piping vibration suppression, much still remains unclear due to the complex response of viscoelastic polymers influenced by multiple mechanophysical players. In this study, a prediction model is developed by incorporating a modified fractional derivative standard linear solid (FDSLS) model into the harmonic base excitation of a damped single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system, which enables an accurate estimation about the vibration reduction characteristics of viscoelastic polymeric patches without extensive experimentation. The modified FDSLS model is derived by combining an intact FDSLS model with a beam-column analysis, a one-phase exponential growth function, and a Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) model-based shift equation, thus being able to depict the effective dynamic modulus of viscoelastic polymeric patches. The accuracy of the proposed model is evaluated through a set of vibration tests, focused on the effects of thickness, central angle, shape factor, and compressive prestrain on the cut-off frequency of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), polysulfide rubber (PSR), and silicone rubber (SR) patches. The model’s validity is further substantiated through finite element vibration analysis using either the static (or constant) modulus or the effective dynamic modulus derived from the modified FDSLS model. Furthermore, the applicability of our predictive framework is substantiated by experimental validation employing a commercial compressor. The findings will provide a generalizable basis for designing and optimizing viscoelastic polymeric patches across different materials. © 2026 Elsevier Ltd.
