In this study, refrigerant mixtures composed of HFC32, HFC134a, HFC152a, HFC125 were selected based upon a theoretical study to replace HCFC22 used predominantly in room air conditioners. A water to water breadboard heat pump of 1 ton capacity was designed and manufactured to experimentally measure the performance of various refrigerants. Proper lubricants of the same viscosity were used for various fluids. Test results showed that HFC32/HFC134a binary mixture and HFC32/HFC125/HFC134 ternary mixtures yielded better performance in all aspects as compared to HCFC22. Use of a suction line heat exchanger did not make any significant change in the performance of all refrigerants tested. All HFC refrigerant mixtures showed much lower compressor discharge temperature indicating that they are good in term of the system reliability.
