Experimental Evaluation for Cross-drilled/Slotted Rotors of Automotive Disc Brake in Aspect of Abrasion
초록
Cross-drilling and slotting on frictional surface of the brake rotor are generally known as a method to improve cooling efficiency of the brake system. These shapes have particular advantages beside of cooling such as shaving effect of slot shape that maintains a clean surface of pad-to-rotor contact and venting effect of drilled shape that provides paths for the gas to escape. However, the machined patterns on the friction surface of the rotor is able to act as a stress concentration point, which can have serious consequences such as ro-tor failure. The patterns on the friction surface induces inhomogeneous contact pressure, which is resulting uneven abrasion pattern of the rotor. Consequently, the edge of uneven surface may concentrate stress to the point where cracks start to form and propagate out-ward. In this study, the abrasion pattern of the brake rotor with typical drilled / slotted shape is observed by dynamometer test for understanding its influence on uneven abrasion, where can be acted as the start points of the crack.
