The Influence of bystander type on workplace violence on nurses' handover error in Korea
초록
Purpose: The purpose of current study was to explore the influences of clinical nurses’ workplace bullying, teamwork, and bystander type on handover error of nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was conducted using a structured questionnaire pertaining to workplace bullying, teamwork, bystander type and handovers. The study involved nurses working in a tertiary university hospital having over 1,100 beds, located in a city, over 1.2 million population, in South Korea. The ratio of number of number of beds to nurses ranged from 2.0 to 2.5. Head nurses, and those with < 3 months of work experience were excluded. The questionnaire was administered to 196 bedside nurses at September 2019. Results: A hierarchical multiple regression model with clinical career, workplace bullying, teamwork and bystander type explained 25.0% of nurses’ handover error (F=12.12, p<.001). . Conclusion: Bystanders is more than simple witnesses or observers. Positive bystanders protect the victims, and prevent workplace violence by stopping the bully actions. Furthermore, bystanders who stand up for victims can foster group climate change, thus influencing the entire organization. Conversely, a negative bystander exacerbates the consequences of workplace violence by tolerating and supporting violence, even if they dose not directly participate in violence (Kim, 2020). Therefore, in this study, a positive bystander reduced the handover errors in the clinical area, while a negative bystander exacerbated the handover errors.
