Effect of school food service nutrition teachers' and dietitians' role conflict and self-efficacy on job satisfaction and involvement

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of nutrition teachers' and dietitians' role conflict and self-efficacy on their job satisfaction and involvement. A total of 335 school female nutrition teachers and dietitians from Incheon area were surveyed by a self-reported questionnaire in November of 2010. Collected data were processed using SPSS 15.0. The reliability of the questionnaire was tested and differences between the two groups were analyzed through Student's t-test and Chi-square test. The path models of the research hypotheses were tested using AMOS 16.0. When role conflict, self-efficacy, job satisfaction and involvement were compared according to employment type, job satisfaction was higher in nutrition teachers than in dietitians. Among the subfactors of job satisfaction, satisfaction with job itself, human relation, personnel rating, and welfare system were higher in nutrition teachers. In the results of testing the research models, employment type did not have a significant effect on role conflict and self-efficacy. Regarding to the effect of employment type on job satisfaction, job satisfaction was affected negatively by being a dietitian compared to being a nutrition teacher. Role conflict had a negative effect on job satisfaction but its effect on job involvement was not significant. The effect of self-efficacy on job satisfaction was significant; the higher self-efficacy was the higher job satisfaction was. Job involvement was affected positively by job satisfaction and self-efficacy. Therefore, it is necessary to resolve role conflicts between different types of employment and induce higher self-efficacy, and to develop active and systematic measures for improving job satisfaction and job involvement. Furthermore, dietitians' job satisfaction should be given priority in order to enhance the consumers' satisfaction with the quality of school meals.
