A rapid procedure for the identification of lactobacilli, based on the polymerase chain reaction(PCR) and restriction fragment analysis of 16S rDNA genes was described. Ten isolated lactobacilli and 8 different lactobacillus type species was characterized. Amplified 16S rDNA was digested with 4 different restriction endonuclease. Based on the RFLP data, the isolated KLB 46 was identified as L. crispatus. Antagonistic substance of KLB 46 was heat resistant. The additions of glucose and yeast extract did not increase proportionally the variable cell number respectively. The specific growth rate and maximum viable cell number of KLB 46 was highest at pH 5.5. However, the difference in maximum viable cell number was not much compared with the results obtained at pH 4.5 and pH 6.5.
