Maker of face inlaid glass bead and traditional clothing wearing necklaces

초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the symbolism and meaning of beads, their relationship to Silla culture, and the overall practice of glass bead making. In addition, this study aims to examine the meaning of necklaces made of beads and confirm the excellence of ancient Korean technology. The research methods include artefacts and literature. Literary records show that the people of Mahan, Buyeo, and Silla regarded beads as treasures and used them as ornaments, and we found that design elements such as beaded's sangtu, gold crowns, birds, and hwamok are all closely related to the founding myth of Silla's Kim Alji and the sacred birds and sacred beasts of the north. In addition, inlaid glass beads have been excavated from the Sillia Tomb and face-inlaid glass beads from the Doganmori Tomb in Japan, confirming the theory of Silla's own production. Therefore, it is clear that ancient Korea loved bead-based jewellery and had excellent metalworking and inlaying skills to make it, so it must have been made in-house.
