The carbon dioxide could have been utilized as oxidant for both oxygen involved oxidation and oxidation as the hydrogen abstraction with or without oxygen. The latter is very useful for the dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons as well as oxidation of alkylaromatics due to its role as a soft oxidant, which gives both enhanced activity and selectivity on the corresponding alkenylaromatics. In the oxidative dehydrogenation of vinylcyclohexene, the co-presence of CO2 onto O2 favorably promotes the selectivity on styrene due to promotional effect on hydrogen abstraction role of CO2. Hence, the role of CO2 in these oxidative reactions is explained to enhance the selective hydrogen abstraction through the surface oxygen from the adsorbed CO2 on heterogeneous catalyst having oxygen defects.
