Friction Control of Magneto-rheological Elastomer under Rolling Motion

Magneto-rheological elastomers (MREs) are smart materials whose stiffness and shear modulus can be changed by applying an external magnetic field. There has been much research on evaluating the material properties and tribological characteristics of MREs. However, the applications of the friction of MREs have not been studied yet. In this study, the rolling friction coefficient-slip rate control of MREs was examined. Various speed conditions were applied to confirm the friction property under different applied magnetic field strengths. The rolling friction coefficient-slip rate results obtained in the presence and the absence of a magnetic field were also compared. It was found that the slip rate could be controlled by the application of a magnetic field that controls the friction coefficient. Hence, it can be stated that under a controlled applied magnetic field, MREs can be used in anti-lock brake systems as a stiffness-controlled material.
