Synthesis and Characterization of Some Polynitroimidazoles

High energetic materials with high performance and low sensitivity have been a key concern in weapon system. Polynitro imidazoles are important insensitive high energetic compounds. Polynitrocompound 1 was obtained when 2-(5-nitroimidazolyl)acetate ethylester treated with mixed acids (HNO3 and H2SO4). Trinitro 1 was converted to dinitro compound 2 via its potassium salt by treating with alkaline hydroxyl amine solution followed by acidification with H2SO4. From the UV spectral studies, the compound 2 exhibits imidazole-imidazoline tautomerism in methanol.
