In this paper, I have adopted the indigenous psychologies approach advocated by Kim (Kim, 1999, 2000) to examine adolescent achievement and parent-child relationship in Korea. For this purpose, the following three aspects will be discussed. First, I will examine the educational aspiration and achievement, using the indigenous psychologies approach. In this section, empirical analysis of adolescent and adult achievement and attribution that stress self-regulation will be reviewed. This tendency can be linked to the influence of Confucian philosophy on education and self-cultivation. Second, the relationship between adolescent achievement and parent-child relationship will be examined. The parent-child relationship in Korean traditional family, which has been influence by Confucian philosophy and tradition, will be provided. Empirical studies, that examine adolescents’ perception of parent-child relationship and achievement, will be reviewed. Finally, the meaning of family and the role of parents will be examined as a foundation for adolescents’ educational aspiration and achievement. Third, Korea is undergoing rapid economic, social, and cultural changes. The change in Korean family structure and value system and their influence on parent-child relationship and adolescent achievement will be discussed.
