Abstract. Paying attention to the situation under which no more reading of urban space through existing city codes is possible, the study is focused on the Heukseok Subway Station as a transportation means that make understanding of fragmented city space possible within the cycles of de-codifying and re-codifying. The study attempts to examine how the Heukseok Subway Station enters into a relation with the socio-cultural realm of the area where the station is located through transforming the space, to investigate how to build a three dimensional environment that helps recording city memory, and to propose a design alternative in which the subway station is to intervene in the fragmented city as a sophisticated architectural program. Key words: Heukseok subway station, Border area, Ecological Path, Public space
