Efficacy and safety of intravenous Levofloxacin in adult urinary tract infection

Introduction : Levofloxacin, the levorotatory insomer of ofloxacin, is known to have activity against a broad range of Gram-positive or negative organisms. We investigated the efficacy and safety of intravenous Levofloxacin in 39 adult patients with urinary tract infection. Materials and Methods : Clinical data of thirty nine patients who satisfied more than one of the inclusion criteria and completed intravenous injection of Levofloxacin were analysed. Inclusion criteria are : 1)age more than 18 2) in-patients diagnosed under the base of clinical symptoms and signs of UTI 3) pyria( 5 WBC/hpf) 4) positive urine culure (10000 CFU/ml) 5) no previous antibiotics treatment prior to start Levofloxacin 6) in female patients, under the approval of contraception. Included patients received intravenous Levofloxacin 250 mg daily at least 72 hours. Clinical and microbiological evaluations were proceeded at the admission, completion of the treatment, and one or two weeks after completion of the treatment. Results : Teh overall bacteriologic eradication rate was 89.7% (35/39) with overall clinical success rate of 100%(39/39) (cure 76.9%, improve 23.1%). There was not any significant adverse effects that requires reduction of the drug dosage or to cease the administration of the drug. Conclusion : These results suggest that intravenous Levofloxacin is safe and effective in the management of UTI in adults.
