Water toxicity monitoring by continuous culture of Photobacterium phosphoreum had been developed in our lab. After 10 days of operation, a mutant, which emitted no light, appeared and dominated the population, resulting in a rapid decrease in bioluminescence. To overcome this problem, we attempted to use an immobilized reactor where cells were continuously released into the medium. This prevented the rapid loss of bioluminescence and contamination of the reactor, which is essential for long-term operation in field. The concentration and bioluminescence of released cells were high enough to measure the water toxicity for more than 4 weeks
