Direct Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Flow and Mass Transfer around a Rotating Circular Cylinder

Turbulent flow around a rotating circular cylinder has been investigated by DNS. Calculations were performed for three cases of low Reynolds number, ReR*=161, 336, and 623, based on the cylinder radius and friction velocity. The level of mean velocity is lower in the buffer and outer regions but the logarithmic region still has a slope equal to the inverse of the von Karman constant. The budget of the turbulent kinetic energy was computed. Next, characteristics of turbulent mass transfer around a rotating circular cylinder have been investigated by DNS. The concentration field was computed for three different cases of Schmidt number, Sc=1, 10 and 100 at ReR*=336. Wall-limiting behavior within the diffusion layer was examined. Turbulence budgets revealed a strong Sc dependence of turbulent scalar transport.
