Understanding Film

초록

The key to understanding film for the purpose of teaching lies in an acknowledgment of its multi-level properties. Most non-film specialists readily recognize the medium’s sociological impact and proceed from this useful vantage point. However, film also has formal and stylistic dimensions that are capable of modifying or even challenging any ideological reading on its surface. This lecture will attempt a second look at the early debates regarding the specificity of the medium vis-à-vis other Western art forms down, consider the implications of the ongoing convergence of related media, and suggest ways of using an understanding of film form and style as a way of enriching classroom discourse.
