Enhancement of lithium–iodine battery performance via a new dual-salt electrolyte composition

The lithium‑iodine (Li-I2) battery is garnering attention as a promising candidate for next-generation secondary batteries owing to its cost-effectiveness and relatively simple reaction mechanisms. In this study, a novel dual-salt electrolyte composition comprising lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate and lithium nitrate in a diglyme solvent is proposed. This electrolyte activates a high-voltage discharge plateau and enhances discharge capacity compared to single-salt counterparts, thereby increasing the energy density of the Li-I2 battery. The battery exhibits excellent cyclability, retaining 98.2% of its discharge capacity after 100 cycles. Furthermore, a streamlined electrode configuration utilizing a lightweight carbon fiber fabric enables a simplified structure and a straightforward, scalable fabrication process. This work is expected to make a contribution to the practical application of Li-I2 batteries. © 2026 Elsevier B.V.
