Comprehensive Optimization of Support System for Conventional Tunnelling

Support system such as rockbolt, shotcrete and steel sets are important primary components for conventional tunnelling due to their influence on tunnel stability. Selection of appropriate and cost effective support system and proper installation of tunnel support system are important factors for tunnel construction. RMR and Q-system have been used to classify the rock mass and to design the tunnel support system in empirical manner. However, these methods are time consuming due to iterative design procedure and difficult to verify their validity. In this study, differential evolution algorithm is introduced to optimize tunnel support system design. DEA constructed in this study is based on both theoretical and numerical methods. The suggested optimum design scheme provides cost effective and safe support system for conventional tunneling. © 2019, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.
